😓In Case You’re About To Give Up, Read This! – Arrey Bate On Wizkid And Drake Story

  • by
Something happened to me last night.
It was 3:29am and I was still sited cross-legged in my little home office at one corner of the room
I was sited head down and my tiny fingers were buried into the keyboard of my laptop

Everywhere was stack silent but for the subtle music playing in the background
I was supposed to be finishing a sales funnel, crafting its ad copy and writing the final email sequence to launch the funnel by weekend.

(In case you didn’t know what a Funnel is, it’s a marketing term used to describe the actual journey a customer goes through before making a purchase – from awareness to action)

Well, I’d been concentrated for hours that I ignored the music unconsciously
Then the song “Come Closer” by Wizkid came on
The delivery captured me that I quickly scrolled my browser tabs to see who sang it
No jokes!
I didn’t know Wizkid sang “Come Closer” and featured Drake in it
Can you believe me?

Anyways,

I paused to listen and listen again
And then listened a second time
So I’m here enjoying the music, and to one end of my screen, YouTube suggested that I listened to another song

It’s called “One Dance”, a song by Drake featuring Wizkid and Kayla (as I saw)
“So Wizkid and Drake have several songs together?”
I thought to myself as I clicked by impulse to listen
“Come Closer” had a mad delivery and I wasn’t expecting anything less in another song by both artists

I listened to “One Dance” from start to finish but didn’t seem to hear Wizkid sing …
Did I miss something ?
I paused and replayed it again

Nothing!
This third time, I remember hearing a second male voice on the song

Then my brain opened!

So in 2016, Drake featured Wizkid on the song “One Dance”
But Wizkid’s verse was almost unnoticeable
His part actually lasted for less than 17 seconds (as I counted)
It’s the reason I could barely think he actually featured on the song
And in the bridge when he sang, it was merely a backup role

In the YouTube comments, I read how people mocked at him for having his name on a song with Drake where he could barely be given a verse to sing
They called him names and said he was a “backup singer”
Someone even said he was “scratching the white man’s door”

That was in 2016
But in 2017 everything was different!

Wizkid’s song “Come Closer” featuring Drake hit the world markets and topped charts in America, Europe and our own Africa
I watched again how Drake went on interviews and talk about Wizkid
Both artists later headlined a show and filled the 20,000 capacity 02 Arena in the UK

Do you know what that means?

As I thought about this, it occurred to me there’s always going to be that lost moment when you’re trying to build your way, and it’s like you’re lost in the loophole
I’ve talked about this before but I wanted to share it again as a reminder because it’s so important and will change everything for us!
